Wolf leaving UNCW to take over G League’s Swarm

WILMINGTON, NC (StarNews) — Tipoff is more than two months away for the UNCW men’s basketball team, but the Seahawks already have a void on the coaching staff.

According to a report from Adam Johnson of 2ways10days.com, Joe Wolf will be named the head coach of the NBA G League’s Greensboro Swarm. Sources within the UNCW program confirmed the move to the StarNews, although no timetable for an official announcement has been set. The Swarm will be holding tryouts September 15.

Wolf has previous head coaching experience in pro basketball minor leagues, working with the CBA’s Idaho Stampede from 2004-06 and the NBA D League’s Colorado 14ers from 2006-08. In those four seasons, Wolf amassed a 105-91 record with three appearances in the postseason. The 14ers reached the D League final during the 2006-07 campaign.

The final assistant coaching hire for C.B. McGrath when he took over in Wilmington, Wolf has a long history of working in professional basketball. The 13th pick of the 1987 NBA Draft out of the University of North Carolina, Wolf spent 11 seasons in the NBA, including one in Charlotte.
