Woman charged in toddler’s shooting death at county home

HENDERSONVILLE, NC (AP) — Another person has been charged in the shooting death of a 2-year-old at Henderson County.

The Henderson County Sheriff’s Office told media outlets 28-year-old Heather Stepp was charged with involuntary manslaughter in the death of Abagail Newman. Stepp was caring for multiple children at the home on Oct. 26 when Newman was shot.

Authorities say Newman suffered a gunshot wound after a loaded shotgun was left on a table at the home. District Attorney Greg Newman says it’s unknown how the gun discharged. She was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Stepp’s husband, 31-year-old James Stepp, was also charged with involuntary manslaughter in connection with the death. Maj. Frank Stout says James Stepp wasn’t at home when the shooting occurred.

The investigation continues.

It isn’t clear if the two have attorneys.
