‘Women can do anything’: Dozens take to ocean for all-female surf contest

WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, NC (WWAY) — The 2018 Wahine Classic took place over the weekend in Wrightsville Beach.

The two-day surfing competition was held near the Oceanic Pier.

The word “Wahine” means young female surfer. The event is one of the only all-female surfing competitions.

It has been going on for more than 20 years now.

More than 60 girls took to the water to catch some waves. Competitor Kylee Heath, 11, says the contest empowers young girls in the sport to follow their dreams.

“We just show the world that we can do anything,” Heath said. “Women can do anything. It doesn’t matter what age you are. You can still do whatever you want to do. And this is such a great sport that it just brings the whole community in and it’s just a great event to be in.”

Heath has been competing in the classic for three years.

Her favorite part of the event is the uplifting attitude and how supportive the girls are of one another.
