BRUNSWICK COUNTY, N.C. (WWAY) — Women veterans from across southeastern North Carolina are expected to gather for a two-day summit focused on health care access, resources and challenges facing women who served in the military.

The Women Veterans Health Care Summit, hosted by American Legion Post 543, is scheduled for Thursday and Friday.

Organizers say the event will bring together women veterans, health care professionals and community leaders to discuss issues affecting women veterans and explore ways to improve access to care.

According to organizers, Brunswick County is home to an estimated 15,000 veterans, including between 2,000 and 3,000 women veterans.

The summit will include presentations, resource information and discussions centered on health care needs that organizers say can differ from those of male veterans. Topics are expected to include access to services, available support programs and barriers that may prevent veterans from receiving care.

Organizers say the goal is to identify challenges facing women veterans and encourage conversations that could lead to improvements at the local, state and national levels.

The event is the first summit of its kind hosted by the organization in the region.

Registration is required, and organizers say space is limited.
