Women’s Equality Day
Today is Women’s Equality Day and members of the League of Women Voters took the time to celebrate.
Aabout 50 members of the League’s Lower Cape Fear Division gathered at the Pilot House for lunch.
Women’s Equality Day commemorates the Nineteenth Amendment, which gave women the right to vote in 1920.
Photographer Patricia Shaw was the key note speaker at the event. Shaw said women who do not take advantage of their opportunity to vote are missing out.
“They’re missing the boat. They’re not having any kind of say in what happens in their lives — any kind of say about militarism, economics, healthcare,” said Shaw.
Shaw also spoke about her current UNCW exhibit, “There’s A Woman in the House.” The exhibit details her coverage of leading female politicians since the 1980s.
