Woods fire blamed for large power outage overnight

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Brunswick Electric Membership Corporation (BEMC) says a woods fire near Bolivia led to a large-scale power outage overnight in Brunswick and Columbus counties.

BEMC says the outage affected about 50,800 customers shortly after midnight.

The utility says the woods fire near NC 211 and Clemmons Road last night destroyed poles for a Duke Energy transmission line, which supplies electricity to BEMC, which knocked out power to two BEMC substations around 12:30 a.m. BEMC says power was out for about an hour.

BEMC says the outage affected members from as far north as Supply down to the state border and into Old Dock in Columbus County.
