World Oceans Day: Aquarium highlights importance of clean water
FORT FISHER, NC (WWAY) — Friday is World Oceans Day. The North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher is celebrating with plans for the entire weekend.
World Oceans Day is a time people around the world reflect on how important it is to keep oceans clean.
The aquarium is celebrating with OceanFest. They will be showing the movie “Chasing Coral” about coral reefs and bleaching.
Visitor Experiences Coordinator Gail Lemiec says staff will also be on-hand to teach people how to do their part including one small change we can all make.
“A focus for World Oceans Day is eliminating single use plastics, so if we make those small changes like skipping straws when we’re out at a restaurant or switching to reusable bags instead of plastic grocery bags, those small changes add up to big impacts,” Lemiec said.
The aquarium hosts OceanFest Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. till 4 p.m.
It’s free with an admission ticket or membership.
