WPD crime lab gets international accreditation, looks to up staffing

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The Wilmington Police Department’s Crime Lab now has its international accreditation, which puts it on a level with state and nationally recognized labs.

The lab performs blood alcohol and controlled substance testing. It can turn results in about two weeks.

Crime lab manager Bethany Pridgen said it took about 18 months to get accredited.

“It kind of shows that even though we are small, we still do our work just as well,” she said. “Sometimes I think we definitely have to work harder, ’cause there’s not that many of us to do the work. I am really proud of the accomplishment.”

The lab hopes to increase the amount of work it can to process by hiring more technicians. Right now the lab has just one full-time one part-time worker.
