WPD: Officer cleared in pedestrian-involved crash

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A spokeswoman with the Wilmington Police Department said one of their officers was cleared by The Highway Patrol after hitting a man walking in a street earlier this week.

Linda Rawley said officer Raymond Luce was driving on Castle Hayne Road near McRae Street around 3 a.m. Monday when he hit Stephen Lilly, 33. She said the man was walking in the street and wrapped in a gray blanket. Witnesses told investigators the office didn’t see Lilly in the middle of the road.

Lilly is recovering at New Hanover Regional Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries, police said. No charges will be filed against Luce, who is a two-year veteran of WPD.
