WPD cracking down on stopping for school buses

The Wilmington Police Department is teaching drivers a lesson about stopping for school buses.

Thanks to a high number of violations along school bus routes in New Hanover County, police are stepping up enforcement.

Today WPD officers followed bus drivers on their morning and afternoon routes to crack down on drivers who pass stopped school buses.

“I feel it’s a good thing because I have some that run my bus on Rafer Avenue and kids have to walk across the street, and I’m scared that they may hit them. It’s like they don’t care,” said bus driver Bernadette Allen.

Four drivers were cited today for passing a stopped school bus, and one driver was cited for reckless operation.

Wilmington Police Sergeant Mike Donelson says it’s reassuring that today’s numbers were relatively low.

Targeted bus route enforcement will continue for the remainder of the week.
