WPD honors citizen for thwarting robbery

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Wilmington Police honored a man who risked his life to help out a convenience store clerk. Officers honored Troy Hancock for his bravery with a plaque.

Hancock went into the Handee Hugo on North College Road on July 2 and noticed a strange man at the counter. Minutes later, the man was trying to attack the clerk and steal from the store.

Hancock got the thief down on the ground and held him there until police responded. Hancock says he did what he had to do.

“I look at it as that’s somebody’s wife, somebody’s sister, somebody’s girlfriend, and I would hope that somebody would do that for my daughter or my wife or what have you, my mother, for that matter, that they would do that to if anything was to happen,” Hancock said.

Chief Ralph Evangelous says he wishes there were more citizens like Hancock in our community.
