November 20 – 21, 2010

Case#: 2010-042984

Time: 2:51 a.m. – Saturday morning

Location: 4720 New Centre Drive

Offense: Common Law Robbery

Summary: The male victim, age 22, reported that he and a friend shared a taxi after drinking downtown. The victim said the taxi driver dropped him at New Centre and Market to avoid going all the way to his residence several blocks away. The victim was walking on New Centre toward home when he saw a light blue SUV-type vehicle stop and park on New Centre. He said two men got out of the vehicle and began to yell at him in Spanish. Then the men began to punch and kick the victim until he fell to the ground. The victim said he pulled his wallet from his back pocket and offered if to his attackers, hoping they would stop beating him. One of the men grabbed the wallet and ran. After hitting the victim a few more times, the other man ran, too, and the two fled in the SUV. The victim sustained bruises on his forehead but no serious injuries. The stolen wallet contained a driver’s license, Social Security card, multiple credit cards and approximately $200 cash.

Time: 2:21a.m. – Monday morning

Location: 300 block Orange Street

Offense: PWISD marijuana, resist / obstruct a public officer

Summary: WPD officers responded to a report of a man trying to break into cars in the 300 block of Orange Street. A responding WPD officer spotted a man matching the suspect description. The officer stopped the man and patted him down. As a back-up officer arrived, the man took off running. One of the officers was able to apprehend the suspect and discovered nearly 26 grams of marijuana in his jacket pocket. The suspect, Davon Monteau Simon, do.b. 8-16-1990, of Wilmington was arrested and charged as noted above. Officers were unable to locate any vehicles that had been broken into, and concluded that the suspect had been checking for unlocked car doors. Simon is in custody at the NHC detention facility under $5,000 secure bond. Booking photo is attached.

Time: 2:19 a.m. Monday morning

Location: 100 block Forest Hills Drive

Offense: Trafficking Cocaine and related charges

Summary: WPD officers responded to a 911 call for someone trying to break into a residence. A responding officer spotted a man matching the description that had been broadcast. The officer got out with the man and asked if he had a weapon, and the man said he had a knife. The knife was not in the pocket as the suspect had said, so the officer patted him down. In the process, the officer found 32.8 grams cocaine in the suspect’s jacket. Xavier Lamar Cooper, d.o.b. 5-15-1990, of Wilmington was arrested and charged with trafficking cocaine, possession with intent to manufacture / sell / deliver and possession of drug paraphernalia. The original caller confirmed that the suspect had been beating on the front door of a residence but had not gained entry. (No breaking and entering charges were filed). Cooper is in custody at the NHC detention center under $40,000 secure bond.
