Wrightsville Beach Museum to showcase Shell Island mailbox in interactive exhibit

WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, NC (WWAY) — The Wrightsville Beach Museum of History will give the public a closer look at one of the area’s most unique landmarks next month with a new interactive exhibit inspired by decades of messages left in the Shell Island mailbox.
“I WAS HERE: The Wrightsville Beach Mailbox at Shell Island” will be on display Aug. 4-6 at Seapath Yacht Club. An opening reception and cookout is scheduled for Aug. 4 from 5 to 8 p.m.
The exhibit is based on letters, notes and artifacts collected from the Wrightsville Beach Museum Mailbox at Shell Island, located at the north end of Wrightsville Beach.
Originally installed in 2003, the mailbox has become a place where visitors leave personal reflections, messages to loved ones, goals, expressions of gratitude and other handwritten notes. The journals are periodically collected and archived by the Wrightsville Beach Museum of History.
Museum officials say the installation explores the ways the mailbox has connected generations of visitors and preserved personal stories that reflect a wide range of human experiences.
The exhibit is curated by interdisciplinary artist and Wrightsville Beach Museum curator Deidre Carney and Rebekah Burroughs, a graduate student in the University of North Carolina Wilmington’s Public History Program. Student members of the museum’s Junior Docents program also contributed to the project, gaining experience in museum curation, digital imaging, archival practices and creative arts.
According to the museum, the Junior Docents program is a free opportunity for students in grades 4-12 to develop hands-on skills in history, curation and the arts while working alongside museum professionals.
The exhibit is open to the public and highlights how the Shell Island mailbox has become a lasting repository for memories shared by residents and visitors over the past two decades.
