Wrightsville Beach pastor talks church safety after Texas church shooting

WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, NC (WWAY) — It has been one week since the shooting in Sutherland Springs Texas and now church safety is a topic for one pastor and his congregation.

“Every Sunday here we have the opportunity to come and worship and to invite anyone in to love everyone and show that love to everyone. That doesn’t change,” Wrightsville Beach Baptist Pastor John McIntyre said.

After more than two dozen lives were taken in a Sutherland Springs Texas church and Pastor McIntyre said his heart is with those suffering, but it will not make him fear stepping inside a house of God.

“My job as pastor is to provide for the safety and security of this flock, and I take that very seriously,” McIntyre said.

Members of the Wrightsville Beach Baptist Church agree safety is important, but they will not live in fear.

“When I got up to come to church this morning it was like any other Sunday getting up and coming to church because I come to church for the reason of worship and there was absolutely no fear and the worry is for the those people who have suffered such a terrible loss,” church member Carole Jackson said.

Kenneth Roebuck who is a Deacon at the church said there should be a protection plan in place, but making people feel welcomed is also important.

“We shouldn’t walk everyday in fear, but yet we need to keep our eyes open and prepare,” Roebuck said.

Moving forward Pastor McIntyre said he does not plan on being armed, but is thankful for police who keep a watch on the church.

“Even if the worst possible thing were to happen and come into our campus and some how make it passed any safe guards that we have in place, I know that God is in charge and he has the ultimate say and he brings good from bad,” McIntyre said.

Pastor McIntyre said church attendance numbers were down today it could be for a number of reasons, but he does wonder if recent events had any affect on that.
