Wrightsville Beach to start hurricane season volunteer program

WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, NC (WWAY) — The Town of Wrightsville Beach will soon be looking for volunteers to help out during hurricane season.

Town Manager Tim Owens said the new volunteer program comes after an overwhelming season last year with Hurricane Matthew.

Owens said they will be looking for about 30 volunteers of people who live in Wrightsville Beach or business owners. He said the volunteers will be called if they know a storm with imminent threat is coming.

Owens said the volunteers will help answer phones, assess damage, help with permits and other storm related things.

“I think you know having a small staff you know we can get overwhelmed working 24/7,” Owens said. “We really need that support from the community and it really helps them give back to their community, so we’re looking to do this year in and year out.”

Owens said they will start advertising for volunteers in the next two weeks. Then, he said they will have an orientation for the volunteers who are chosen.
