Wrightsville Beach repairing beach damage from storm
Wrightsville Beach Public Works crews are busy cleaning up after last week’s unnamed storm.
Monday, crews repaired the six feet of drop-offs that formed as a result of the high tide and storm surges. Bulldozers evened out the drop-offs to make ramp-like structures where there was erosion.
The center of the island saw the worst of it. “The last time this occurred was immediately after Hurricane Ophelia several years ago, and after that event we actually had to bring sand onto the beach to rebuild it.” said Mike Vukelich of the Public Works.
The town worked with the Army Corps of Engineers to get permits for the repairs. The Public Works Department plans to do more extensive, permanent work after hurricane season is over.
