W.Va. man pleads guilty in fatal traffic pileup
ASHEVILLE — A West Virginia trucker and former state police officer wept as he pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge from the interstate wreck he caused that killed a toddler and left another child with brain injuries.
The Asheville Citizen-Times reported Thursday that 60-year-old Carroll Edward Jett apologized to the families of those involved in the July 1 crash on Interstate 40 east of Asheville.
Jett received supervised probation, 200 hours of community service and a $500 fine. He pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of death by vehicle.
A state trooper testified that Jett was checking a computer message when he plowed into a line of cars at an estimated 60 mph.
