WWAY Comments of the Week: January 18-23
It has been an incredible week. Between the winter weather and the historic inauguration, we have had a lot to talk about.
Let’s start with your comments on our new president. Most of our comments came from stories based on the inauguration moments captured on the web, as well as President Obama’s comparisons to Abraham Lincoln.
Our first guest was happy for change, writing:
“It will take 50 years for this country to recover for the damage Bush did. This country lost world respect under his watch. Please stay on your farm Bush, no more help.”
Another wants to be sure President Obama is held to the same standard as President Bush:
“It stands to reason that anything that happens from here on out is Mr. Obama’s fault. I don’t want to hear ‘act of congress’ when he screws up. I don’t want to hear ‘the American people’ when he screws up. Whenever something happened the last eight years it was Mr. Bush’s fault. So let’s see if you liberals are really looking at this situation unbiasedly or if you are just full of a bunch of talk.”
A third guest took the middle ground with this comment:
“I am an Obama supporter, and I am hopeful for the future. I actually helped put Bush into office the first time and I respect him as our former president. I am also very proud of our country for looking past the skin color and voting in a multi-racial man into office. I am going to support Obama, and if Mccain had won I would have supported him as well…. I know Obama will make decisions that I won’t agree with, but nevertheless he is still the president, and he needs the people of the United States to come together.”
The cold weather and preparing for the snow prompted some heated comments, many of them from northerners firing off at southerners, and vice versa.
A guest who calls themselves Confused, writes:
“How long will this panic last? There was a dusting of snow and the town shut down. I do not understand, should we all stop our lives and wait for summer to get here?”
A second guest, who may be a truck driver judging by his screen name, writes:
“Those who have always lived in the area know what you transplants here don’t, and that is that we don’t get snow often. The drivers of the buses that transport the children are not used to the snow, much less dealing with drivers that cut you off. There is no training course for them. So bottom line for you complainers, either take all the kids to school in your vehicle or be thankful to know your child is safe at home.”
One final story that got a lot of attention on the web – the New Hanover County Commissioners decision to sue the state, over the insurance rate hike facing coastal homeowners.
One viewer wrote:
“It’s too often that we speak down about our local government (I’m guilty of it), but seeing that the New Hanover County Commission has joined the fight. Is clear proof that someone out there is working for the people. I own a house in Wilmington, which has experienced Hurricane Diana, Floyd, Bertha, Fran, and Bonnie. I’ve never experienced hurricane damage nor have I ever taken a claim. It’s obvious that the insurance hike is aimed at New Hanover County in an unfair manner.”
Another viewer gave the commissioners a bit of a backhanded compliment:
“Holy cow! I think I just saw a pig fly by my office window! Satan has to be freezing right now! Our commissioners actually did something”
Keep the comments coming! We love to know what you think.
