DURHAM, NC (AP) – With no meeting on the Atlantic Coast Conference schedule, rivals North Carolina and North Carolina State will play a nonconference baseball game in Durham on April 15.
The teams played an 18-inning game at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park last May during the ACC tournament, a 2-1 UNC win in the longest game in tournament history.
The expanded league has a 30-game conference schedule, with teams all but three programs during the regular season. In a scheduling quirk, the longtime rivals separated by a 30-minute drive won’t play a weekend series in the ACC race.
N.C. State won a coin flip to determine the home team.
The teams announced the matchup with a joint news conference Tuesday at the park, home to the Triple-A Durham Bulls.
