X marks the spot as ILM runway closed for upgrade
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Driving by, you may have noticed a large “X” on one of the runways at Wilmington International Airport. The runway is closed because the FAA is installing a new navigational aid.
Basically, it’s new lights and signals that will help a pilot keep the plane vertically and horizontally in position as it approaches the runway at night, or during bad weather.
The runway is closed for work during the week, but it’s open during the weekend. ILM leaders say the airport’s other runway is open, so this is not interfering with any air traffic.
