YMCA hosts community vision tour of new facility

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A fire destroyed a local YMCA three years ago. A few years later, and they are getting closer and closer to the day they will open their new doors.

The YMCA hosted a community vision tour so the community could come out and see the new building off of Market and 29th Streets. The new building has more space than the last, offering more opportunities for the community and families. Even though the fire was devastating, it led to an opportunity for growth.

“We used that opportunity to redesign the Y. And so we found tremendous community support, not only for a raise in the capital for the building but also for all of our programs. So, we’ve continued to operate since then. And then in December we’ll open the Nir Family Y,” Southeastern North Carolina YMCA CEO and President Dick Jones said.

Even though it is set to open in December, a new family pool will open in about two weeks. Jones says it was a tough few years but he thanks the community for the support
