Young voters to have big impact on upcoming election

Young voters are expected to have a big impact on this year’s election. And some high school leaders are making it their mission to register their peers.

A high school student is trying to make voting easier for her peers as part of a community service project. South Medford High School senior Alix George is taking great strides to
Insure her fellow peers will vote this year.

George said, “I’m trying to get as many young people as I can to register to vote and really get involved in the decisions made for their future.”

George has been registering students seventeen years old and up as part of her senior project. Wednesday she set up a booth during the school’s lunch period. She says this is her way of helping the community by leading a path for young people to vote.

Voter Jolene Walker said, “I think it’s great she’s trying to get students involved because we need to get more involved because we’re the future and if we don’t have a say in it now then we’re going to regret it now.”

George’s idea is making the process easier for students by cutting out an extra step and an extra excuse not to vote.

Walker said, “I think having it here is easy to access like at lunch is really great because otherwise you have to go online and print it out and send it in and all that stuff.”

Volunteers say it’s good to see young people getting so involved — especially with a big presidential election headed our way.

Volunteer Celina Brown said, “You know if they don’t’ make their voice heard then they really can’t complain what’s going on in our political system.”

For George, so far she’s signed up 200 students, half of her graduating class.

While not every student was interested in registering, organizers still took the time to pass out informational websites just to get students thinking about what they believe.
