Surf City mayor resigns to take state post

SURF CITY, NC (WWAY) — Longtime Surf City Mayor Zander Guy is stepping down.

Guy announced his resignation on Friday morning during a special town meeting.

“I’ve accepted an appointment from Governor Roy Cooper to chair the North Carolina (Alcoholic Beverage Control) Commission,” Guy said, choking up as he read his resignation statement. “It’s a great honor for me to continue to serve the citizens and businesses of this great state in this new capacity.”

It was an emotional announcement for everyone on the Surf City Council.

“It’s an emotional move for me. I’m approaching 69 years of age. And I probably will never get the opportunity that Governor Cooper has offered me in my lifetime again,” Guy said.

This is the second time Guy has been on the North Carolina ABC board, but it is his first as Commission Chair. He says he has a few goals lined up for once he takes office.

“I want to be sure that, number one, I’m concerned about underage drinking. I’m concerned that people drink responsibly. That they don’t drive and drink. And I think it’s all about education…we’ve got to continue to educate the folks,” Guy said.

Mayor Pro Tem Douglas Medlin will take over as mayor for the next three years.

“Zander by far, like I say, has been the best Mayor that has ever been in Surf City. I don’t think I’ll be able to fill his shoes even halfway,” Medlin said.

Guy has been Mayor of Surf City since 1999. The town recognized his nearly 18 years of service with an appreciation award.

While Guy is excited for his next endeavor, he says he will miss Surf City.

“Walking down the street and knowing everyone I come in contact with, and shaking their hand or getting a hug,” he said, naming specific things he will miss about the town.

However, Guy says Surf City will always be his home. He will live in Raleigh during the week, and come back to town on the weekends.

Guy will be sworn in Wednesday March 8th in Raleigh.
