Zhu Zhu Pets concerns, safety tips for toys this holiday

Zhu Zhu Pets were among the stars of Black Friday, as eager shoppers lined up to snag a must-have of the holiday season.

It wasn’t long before the toy hamsters sparked a different kind of frenzy. California consumer group Good Guide raised concerns about some of the toys carrying high levels of antimony; a potentially hazardous substance that can lead to heart and lung problems with prolonged exposure.

It’s a claim the toys’ manufacturer firmly disputed, calling the Good Guide method of testing inferior. Good Guide later said they used a different test than what the federal government uses for their standards.

Whether it’s a Zhu Zhu Pet or another item that tops your little one’s wish list, keep basic safety tips in mind before you buy.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends the following:
— Read labels and choose gifts that are age-appropriate for a child.
— Think large. Avoid toys with smaller parts that children can choke on.
— Look for sturdy construction, and parts that won’t easily break off. That way it’s less likely children will swallow parts, or choke on them.
