Some students at St. Marks Catholic School in Wilmington spent their Sunday cleaning, and riding the waves at Wrightsville Beach. Kids from St. Mark 4th to 8th grades took to the sand to make a stand against litter on our beaches, and they had plenty of fun splashing, surfing, and enjoying a clean Wrightsville Beach afterwards. Aloha! The sensational season for Wilmington Post 10 ended on Sunday against Hawaii at the American Legion World Series in Shelby. Post 10 finishes the 2013 campaign with a 35-4 record. The Wrightsville Beach Wahine Classic surf competition is back by popular demand after a one year hiatus, and these sassy surfers say they hope it's here to stay. Ladies of all ages were fired up and ready to hit the water to ride some serious waves when we showed up, but as the day went along, the fierce competition became more about empowering female surfers than winning first place. There will be two football jamborees in our region on Friday: the BB&T Jamboree in Wilmington and the Buddy Burney Jamboree in Bladen County. The inaugural "Champions 4 Cancer" basketball event concluded on Sunday without a champion. A dispute over prize money led to several teams walking off the court prior to the end of the tournament. In baseball Wilmington Post 10 was a shutout winner over Whiteville on Sunday night. The O'Neill Sweetwater Pro-Am Surf Fest concluded on Sunday with several area surfers holding more than own at Wrightsville Beach in the men's pro finals. Full story...

Former Wilmington resident Cliff Drysdale will be inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame this weekend. Drysdale designed the tennis center at the Country Club of Landfall.
