NCDOT, Jacksonville to improve Marine memorial

The N.C. Department of Transportation and the City of Jacksonville are working together to improve the Beirut Memorial Grove. Last October, NCDOT planted a tree for each service member who died when terrorists bombed the Marine barracks in Beirut, Lebanon, on Oct. 23, 1983.

White House honor comes as vet's business totters

A former Marine Corps sniper in Iraq who started a coffee shop that employs fellow veterans is to be honored at a White House event Wednesday even as he solicits online donations to stay open. Intrepid Life Coffee & Spirits owner Matt Victoriano admitted Tuesday it's ironic to be honored as an example of the successful veteran-turned-entrepreneur when he may have to shut down in less than two weeks.

Hearing set for Camp Lejeune Marine accused of faking own kidnapping

Military officials have scheduled an Article 32 hearing this week for a Marine accused of faking his own kidnapping in Iraq as well as failing to return to his base after visiting relatives in Utah.

Man must pay back $288k for fake boat distress call

videoA man who made a fake "mayday" call to the Coast Guard last year is heading to prison. A federal judge today sentenced Homer Lewis Blackburn of Atlantic Beach to 18 months in prison. He will also have to pay $288,390.80 to cover the cost of the Oct. 8, 2013, hoax.
