10 area stars playing in NCAA Regionals

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Across the 64-team field, five high schools from our area are represented by 10 local stars.

Topsail High School leads the list with four Pirates. Of course you know of Clark Cota and Mason Berne from UNCW, but Clark’s brother Bryce is also looking to make it to Omaha with Campbell. His high school teammate Sam Hall is a freshman at Clemson.

Hoggard and Ashley High School are tied with two a piece.

Kevin Mintz plays for UNCW and Shane Shepard plays for NC State. Also with the Pack is Joe O’Donnell, the pitcher with the most appearances in State history. Julian Blackburn is another Viking in the NCAA’s, also playing for Campbell.

Finally the two from Columbus County at East Carolina: Trey Benton from West Columbus and Turner Brown from Whiteville say they are excited to be playing in the big tournament.

“This is what we came here for, to host a regional in front of this kind of crowd,” Benton said. “It’s going to be a lot of fun this weekend, I can’t wait.”

“It’s a great feeling,” Brown said. “The support we get from Pirate Nation is a feeling you can’t describe so we want to go out there and give it all we got for them.”

We will see 5 of our 10 square off in the Greenville Regional when UNCW and ECU meet up.

Best of luck to our local stars!
