15th annual free Thanksgiving lunch helps those in need
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A Wilmington church organized a free Thanksgiving lunch for the 15th year in a row.
Word Changing Hearts Ministries hosted the annual event at Douglas Academy on Wednesday.
Pastor Darwin Murrill said the event has been a success every year since it began.
“We want to do this because every year, you know, it’s a holiday and holidays can be really lonely for those who don’t have the luxury of family, and so we want to just have people come here and feel the love,” Murrill said.
In addition to a Thanksgiving feast, the event included free Flu shots and tests for HIV, Syphilis and Hepatitis C.
New Hanover County Health Department HIV/STD Outreach Health Educator Richelle Fonville helped with the health screenings at the event.
“This is actually our third year attending,” Fonville said. “We love attending. We love giving back. We love giving back to the community as well.”
“Some of these folks may not get to have a Thanksgiving like we’ll have with our families, and you know, everybody we meet, they’re so appreciative,” Melinda Hillman, a volunteer, said.
“It’s very rewarding to come out here and something I’ve looked forward to all year,” Linda Ramsey, a volunteer, said.
“I think everybody should bless somebody,” Murrill said. “And this is one moment where we’re trying to bless people who are not doing as well, and it’s always good to do, do right.”
