17th annual Brunswick County Intercultural Festival happening this weekend
BELVILLE, NC (WWAY) — The Brunswick County Intercultural Festival is returning for its 17th annual celebration of cultural diversity this Saturday, October 12, 2024, at Riverwalk Park in Belville. The free event, open to the public from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., will offer a wide range of activities, performances, and educational opportunities for people of all ages.
Organized by the Brunswick Arts Council, North Carolina Arts Council, and the Brunswick County Chamber of Commerce, the event invites attendees to experience the rich culture within the county. With its roots in the community since 2004, the festival has grown significantly over the years, expanding to highlight more diverse cultures and traditions.
The event will showcase a variety of cultural performances, children’s activities, ethnic food vendors, and a vibrant International Village. The International Village will feature new countries from Africa, South America, Asia, and Europe, offering festival-goers a unique chance to learn about the customs, traditions, and histories of different nations. A special “Passport to Culture” activity, aimed at introducing children to global cultures, will also be part of the festivities.
“This festival is a wonderful opportunity to bring the community together and celebrate the many cultures that live side by side in Brunswick County,” said organizer Mari-Lou Wong-Chong. “It’s like traveling the world in one day.”
The Entertainment Stage will feature performances from a variety of ethnic artists dressed in traditional costumes, offering music, dance, and visual art displays from around the globe. Grupo Folklorico, a professional performance group, will headline the entertainment lineup, along with several local performers from countries such as China, Thailand, and the Philippines.
Additionally, artwork from local students, highlighting themes of multiculturalism, will be displayed as part of the Poster Art Contest, with winners being recognized on the main stage.
“We are different, but we are one,” Wong-Chong emphasized, reflecting the festival’s core message of inclusion and cultural appreciation.
The Brunswick County Intercultural Festival is committed to fostering an atmosphere of acceptance and understanding through cross-cultural education. Organizers encourage families to attend and enjoy the interactive exhibits, live entertainment, and delicious food from around the world.
Set-up for vendors and participants will begin at 9:00 a.m., with performances kicking off at 11:00 a.m. at Riverwalk Park, located at 580 River Rd SE, Belville, NC.
