BRUNSWICK COUNTY (WWAY) — A 20-year-old man was killed Monday night in an apparent hit-and-run.

Michael Archuleta Jr. was reported missing Monday night after leaving his grandmother’s house to go fishing, the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office said. According to State Highway Patrol, Archuleta was traveling east on a bicycle on Blue Banks Loop Road near Mt. Misery Road. An unknown vehicle struck Archuleta and the bicycle from behind. The driver of the vehicle did not remain at the scene.
The State Highway Patrol says while they’re still working to determine the exact time Archuleta was struck, they believe it happened sometime between 5:00-8:00PM Monday night.  Archuleta was found dead in a ditch on the shoulder of the road just after 7:00AM Tuesday morning. The law enforcement presence was heavy at the scene with family and neighbors looking on as the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office and Highway Patrol worked to figure out what happened.

Anyone with information or video footage is asked to contact North Carolina Highway Patrol.
