Proud ‘Gramps’ in Hampstead celebrates Spieth’s US Open win

HAMPSTEAD, NC (WWAY) —¬†Jordan Spieth knows all about the Hampstead, Topsail Beach area. He used to vacation annually in Pender County in order to visit his grandfather, a Hampstead resident. Spieth won the US Open Sunday. So what does “Gramps” think?

“He would play when he was little. He would put a hole in the front yard and chip little plastic balls in. When I’d go down there we’d chip them, and he used to cut the grass out just like you see in some of these ads on TV, and he would chip into it.¬†He’s a good kid, and that’s how he treats me,” Bob Julius said Monday, getting a little emotional as he talked about his grandson. “I’m sorry. He just, uhhh… ‘What’s up Gramps? You want to sit down next to me?’ We never talk about golf when he’s playing.”

Spieth’s win Sunday at the US Open marked his second major tournament championship, along with April’s Masters. He’s now half way to golf’s Grand Slam with the British Open and PGA Championship coming later this summer. Only one golfer has won the Grand Slam: Bobby Jones in 1930, which was before the Masters even started. Back then the fourth tournament was the US Amateur.
