Coyote spotted running through neighborhood
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — This weekend a video went viral in New Hanover County of a coyote running through a neighborhood carrying a cat.
“I didn’t know what it was,” Anna Nicole Huff, the woman who shot the video, said. “I knew it wasn’t a dog at that point in time because it looked evil.”
Huff was leaving her home on Touch Me Not Drive in King’s Grant, when she saw a coyote holding a cat in its mouth.
When Huff first saw the coyote, it was right where her daughter’s bus stop is located.
Then it ran around the corner.
“He bobbed and weaved inside of houses and finally ducked over into the woods behind this house.” Huff recalled.
Her video of the sighting went viral, getting over 97,000 views on Facebook.
This is the first time in the ten years that Huff has lived here that she’s seen anything like this in the neighborhood.
When she called the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Department, they told her that, despite other sightings in the area, there’s not much that can be done.
“She said that if you have your eyes on it then you can call and they can come trap it. But they can’t set out traps for it.” Huff said.
She added that with the coyote being so close to home, and wooded areas nearby as well, she worries about kids in the area including her daughter.
If you see a coyote, heed huff’s advice and call animal control.
But wildlife experts have told us in the past there’s not much that can be done to get rid of the coyotes and they’re more scared of you than you are of them.
