Groundbreaking set for Love Grove bridge

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) – After years of discussions, work is now set to begin on building a new entrance into the Love Grove neighborhood.

Currently, there is only one way to get into the neighborhood. At times, that road is blocked by train traffic. Nearly four years ago, residents were trapped for hours when a train derailed.  Another entrance will provide residents with another way in and out of the neighborhood.

City Council approved the new access bridge last month.

The $5 million Love Grove bridge is one of 38 projects in the 2014 Transportation Bond. The city says the bridge will cross over Burnt Mill Creek over to One Tree Hill Way on the other side. It will be a two-lane bridge with traffic going both ways and a biking/walking trail to provide connectivity to the neighborhood.

This has been a long road for residents. Former City Councilman Ronald Sparks brought up the issue not long after the train derailment.

Crews will break ground on Friday.  Construction is expected to take about a year to complete.
