9/11 memorial observances around our area


WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Monday marks 16 years since the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

On September 11, 2001, terrorists hijacked four passenger planes. Two planes crashed into New York’s World Trade Center. A third plane slammed into the Pentagon and a fourth crashed in a field in Pennsylvania.

Nearly 3,000 people were killed.

This day is now known as Patriot’s Day and there are some local services around our area for you to attend.

At 8:15 a.m., Camp Lejeune is holding it’s annual observance at the 9/11 Memorial at Jacksonville City Hall.

At 9 a.m. in Hampstead, there will be a 9/11 service at Barlow Vista Baptist Church (22340 US Hwy. 17). It’s presented by the church, American Legion 167 and Woodmen Life.

Around the country, a remembrance ceremony will be held at the 9/11 Memorial Museum in New York. In Washington D.C., President Donald Trump will lead a moment of silence at the White House and attend a ceremony at the Pentagon. Vice President Mike Pence will attend a memorial in Pennsylvania.
