Construction worker dies after falling 6 floors in Wilmington

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A construction worker has died after the Wilmington Fire Department says he fell six floors while working in downtown Wilmington this afternoon.

It happened around 2:30 p.m. at the Cape Fear Hotel Apartments at 2nd and Chestnut streets. WFD say he was part of a construction crew that was replacing part of the building. He was on the scaffolding and somehow fell between five and six stories. He landed on scaffolding that was on the second floor.

WFD units said they had to climb up to the scaffolding, put the man in a basket and used a ladder to help slide him down.

The man was in stable condition when he was taken to New Hanover Regional Medical Center but later died.

The North Carolina Department of Labor’s Safety and Health Division will open an investigation. The department said they received the call from WPD around 3:15 p.m. The department said the man was 32 years old and had an address from Leland.

Wilmington Police Department is investigating.

A portion of the 2nd Street has been closed since bricks fell from the Cape Fear Hotel Apartments back in 2016.
