Wilmington city leaders approve Centerpoint, address short term rentals

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) – Another busy summer night for Wilmington City leaders. City leaders met to talk new development to the Military Cutoff Road corridor as well as short-term rentals and a new police and fire facility.

The meeting began with honoring several WPD officers in their efforts that protected residents when a man barricaded himself in Houston Moore back in January.¬†Officer Ben Galluppi was awarded a Medal of Valor for his heroic efforts saving a woman’s life when she fell into the Cape Fear River last month.

Wilmington city council approved the multi-million dollar contract for a brand new police and fire facility during Tuesday’s meeting. The state-of-the-art facility will allow advanced training for Wilmington police and fire crews.

In a unanimous decision, council voted to approve the CenterPoint development on Eastwood Drive. The local developer Swain and Associates presented the plans to rezone land for the multi use development.

It will bring a 300-room apartment complex, a 200-room hotel, two parking decks and thousands of square feet in office and commercial space.



City leaders also took the final vote to set new standards and rules for short-term rentals around the city.

The city has spent months drafting these new regulations that split short-term rentals into two categories; homestay as well as whole house lodging. The latter meaning the home is rented without the owner present.

The ordinance sets up a series of requirements for rentees, but most importantly it will only allow homestay rentals in the historic as well as several residential zoned areas.

We will update this story as city leaders make their decisions on rentals as well as a resolution on “Red Flag” laws that would establish the ability to revoke gun ownership rights to certain individuals with records of violent or malevolent behavior.
