WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY)–The Laney girls and New Hanover boys started their seasons off on the right foot Wednesday night.
In the girls game, the Laney Buccaneers took a nine point lead into the halftime break. The Bucs threatened to blow the game wide open in the second half, but the Wildcats would pull within five with under a minute to play. It wouldn’t end up being enough as Laney picked up the season opening win over New Hanover, 44-35.
Taylor Chism was the leading scorer for the Buccaneers in the win finishing with 14 points, while Destiny Newkirk lead the Wildcats with eight.
The boys games was a back and forth battle of runs. Laney jumped out to the quick 6-0 lead behind the fast start of Joe Bachman. The Wildcats were back in the game in a flash, taking the 14-10 lead headed to the second quarter.
New Hanover extended their lead to eight at the half, but Laney once again went on a run to pull within two late in the third quarter. From there on out the Wildcats would keep their foot on the gas pedal. They led by 15 to start the fourth quarter and cruised to the 63-54 win.
New Hanover got double digit scoring from Quintell Waddell (16 pts) and James Jones Jr. (15 pts). Sophomore Joe Bachman led Laney offensively with 11 points.
The Buccaneers will be back in action on Friday night taking on Hoggard, while New Hanover travels to take on the Ashley Screamin’ Eagles.
