Wilmington native crowned as Miss Black NC USA

LELAND, NC (WWAY) — One Wilmington native is going national after winning the title of Miss Black North Carolina USA.

Ricki Nelson graduated from UNCW in 2020 where she studied film studies and creative writing. Since then, she’s worked on several productions and more recently entered the world of pageantry.

Miss Black North Carolina USA was her first ever pageant. She won Best in Interview, Best in Talent, People’s Choice, and Miss Black NC Award.

For her talent, Nelson performed a spoken word she wrote titled “I am not your black girl.” Nelson’s next step is to travel to D.C. in August, where she’ll compete in the National Miss Black USA competition and perform that same spoken word.

“I’m honored to be able to represent not just Wilmington but the entire state of North Carolina on the national stage and really being able to showcase what my platform is, which is ‘don’t wait, just be,’” Nelson said.

She said she hopes to play a vital role in the little girls’ life that may be following her journey. She said she wants to encourage everyone to be their true selves and go for your dreams.
