UNCW soccer comes up short in NCAA’s; UNCW volleyball moves on in CAA’s
CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (UNCW) – Junior goalkeeper Carolyn Huddy made a season-high 10 saves, but it was not enough as UNCW dropped a 2-0 decision against top-ranked Virginia in the second round of the NCAA Division I Women’s Soccer Championship at Klöckner Stadium on Friday evening.
The loss ends the Seahawks’ season with a 15-7-1 record while upping Virginia’s mark to 18-1-2. The Cavaliers advance to the third round on Sunday afternoon where they will host USC at 2 p.m.
After a scoreless first half, the Cavaliers took a 1-0 lead in the 51st minute when junior midfielder Alexis Shaffer blasted an 18-yard shot into the top left corner of the goal. Just over 10 minutes later, senior forward Makenzy Doniak upped the advantage to 2-0 when she converted a four-yard shot past Huddy.
Seahawk Storylines
- The Seahawks set a school record by playing their 23rd game of the season.
- Virginia leads the all-time series by a 3-0-0 margin. The Cavaliers posted two of the three wins in the series this year.
- The Seahawks did not allow a goal in the first half for the 18th time in 23 games this season. UNCW outscored its opponents by a 23-8 margin in the opening stanza.
- The Seahawks were shut out for just the fourth time in 23 games this year.
- UNCW allowed more than one goal for just the seventh time this season. Virginia was the first opponent to score more than one goal against the Seahawks since Oct. 4 at Northeastern.
- The Seahawks are now 1-2-0 all-time in the NCAA Tournament. Prior to splitting two games in this year’s tournament, UNCW dropped a 3-0 decision against Georgia in the first round of the 2009 tournament.
- Seniors Lindsey Byrne, Maddie McCormick, Katrina Guillou and Morgan Leyble all played their 80th career games against Virginia on Friday night. They are four of eight players in school history to appear in 80 or more career games.

HARRISONBURG, VA (UNCW) — Freshman Maddy Kline’s 14 kills and Meredith Peacock’s 10 blocks led UNCW into the Colonial Athletic Association semifinals with a 3-0 sweep of sixth-seeded William & Mary on Friday at Sinclair Gymnasium in the league’s championship tournament.
The third-seeded Seahawks improved to 22-7 with the win while the Tribe saw its season end with a 10-20 record.
Kline’s 14 kills were both a match and career-high and she was joined in double figures by Kristen Powell, who finished with 10 kills. UNCW out-hit the Tribe, .256-.028, including .407-.000 in the third set.
Setters Alyssa Desjardins and Bella Borgiotti combined for 35 assists while Desjardins added eight digs and Borgiotti three blocks.
At the net, Peacock matched her own CAA tournament school-record of 10 blocks. UNCW posted six of its 13 blocks on the night in the first set. Powell and Kline chipped in four blocks apiece.
Defensively, UNCW held W&M in check and forced 23 hitting errors. Lindsay Hartmann and Katie McCullough both had 15 digs with McCullough tying her career-high.
Heather Pippus paced the Tribe with seven blocks and add 10 digs. Sara Zumbach held match-high honors with 17 digs while Katie Kemp had 11.
Up next: The Seahawks face second-seed Towson at 7:30 p.m. in the semifinals on Saturday. The match will be streamed on CAA.tv.
How it happened: UNCW, who entered the tournament ranked seventh nationally in blocks, opened the match with six blocks in the opening set and that set the tone for the rest of the match. Peacock had five blocks in the first and four more in the third. In between, the Tribe hit -.069 in the second set.
Notes: Peacock’s previous record of 10 blocks in a CAA tournament also came against W&M in 2013 … UNCW improved to 2-0 against the Tribe in the CAA tournament the last three seasons … The Seahawks are now 15-2 in sweeps this season and 4-1 in neutral site matches … UNCW totaled 26 service errors against W&M this season … The Seahawks will face Towson for the first time in a CAA tournament match on Saturday … The Seahawks also set a new standard with a .256 hitting average tonight, eclipsing the previous tournament-high of .246 set against W&M in 2013.
