Lottery hopes to exceed $529 million for schools

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The North Carolina education lottery says it reached a single-day record of $27.8 million worth of lottery ticket sales yesterday.

That should help the agency exceed this year’s goal of generating $529 million dollars for education. A spokesman said they have not hit that yet, but think they will exceed that number by the June deadline.

State Senator Bill Rabon, who is among the senate’s budget writers, said he wants to see more done with that money inside the schools.

“I would personally like to see all the money going to the classroom or as much as possible going to the classroom, so that it reaches the pupils,” Rabon said. A lot of people are under the impression all the money goes to education and unfortunately not all of it does.”

Rabon said most of the money goes to lower income counties in the state for capital improvements. He hopes to hear some discussion about that during May’s short session.
