Toddler killed in multi-vehicle accident

PENDER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — According to Trooper Henderickson with the North Carolina Highway Patrol, a multi-vehicle accident at around noon on Saturday killed a two-year-old child and sent that child’s mother to the hospital.

Henderickson said a commercial box truck was heading south on Highway 17. The truck did not reduce speed and hit a small SUV stopped at a traffic light. This caused a chain reaction hitting two other SUV’s also stopped at the light.

Officials say the jaws of life were used to get the child and his mother out of their vehicle. The child was pronounced dead at the scene. The mother was transported to New Hanover Regional Medical Center. There is no word on the extent of her injuries or her current condition.

Crews from the Pender County Sheriff’s Office, Pender EMS and Fire, and State Highway patrol were on the scene.
