Greenlands Farm teaches community about sustainable lifestyle

BOLIVIA, NC (WWAY) — Greenlands Farm has offered fresh produce and products to local communities for several years, but it is the animals on that farm who are getting the attention now.

The farm has horses, llamas, pigs, goats, and a lot of chickens. Most of those animals were once neglected, but over the last four year Maud Kelley has been able to adopt them and start a nonprofit organization called HOOF, Helpers of Our Farm.

She says their goal was to provide them a sanctuary. Kelley says they now have tours centered around the animals to educate our community.

She hopes to get schools from Wake County to Brunswick County to visit the farm.

“You get to meet real farmers, you get to interact with real animals, and you get to see real vegetables growing, so it is a very real and tactile experience,” said Kelley. “Something you can not get in the classroom and something a lot of kids just don not get to experience.”

The farm is well known for their produce and whatever doesn’t sell goes to the animals, “That is part of what they eat and then we take their poop and then put it in our compost bend, that composts, then we put it back into our soil. That is what we call a full circle.”

The tour gives visitors a chance to learn about the sustainable lifestyle Kelley and her family live.

“We sell our eggs from are chickens that are all free ranged,” said Kelley. “They are very happy chicks. Our goat’s milk that we collect from, we make goat milk soap and sell in the store.”

Kelley says they could not maintain all the animals without the help from volunteers and they are always looking for more.
