Prescribed burn creates massive smoke plume

PENDER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Fire crews have been out doing prescribed burns in the Holly Shelter Game Land over the past few days, and a WWAY viewer sent in a bird’s eye view of it.

Jeff Wenzel used his drone to get video of the hazard reduction burn on about 100 acres off of Highway 17 north of Hampstead. In the video, you can see just how big and high the smoke can get from even a prescribed burn.

Pender County Emergency Manager Tom Collins said the high winds and low humidity recently have really dried everything out, so crews have been out the past few days preventing bigger fires.
