Boys and Girls Club black history month art contest winners

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Wilmington City Councilman Earl Sheridan and U.S. Cellular announced the winners of the second annual Black History Month Art competition at Brigade Boys & Girls Club.

The contest invited members of Brigade Boys & Girls Club to select an influential African-American and develop his or her likeness into an original 8.5 x 11 portrait using any art medium.

“I think giving a child a hobby or something that they are interested in could help later as far as keeping them from getting into any kind of trouble or things of that nature,” Sheridan said.

Members of the greater Wilmington community voted on the top 10 finalists’ entries throughout the month of February at local U.S. Cellular stores.

The winners are:

First Place — Jade Rivera

Second Place — Latesha Walker

Third Place — Gabriela Gomez

The winners received a $250 Visa gift card.
