Duplin County high school could win more than $100K

DUPLIN COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — You have five more days to help a Duplin County high school win $120,000 in technology.

East Duplin High School in Beulaville is in the running for the Samsung Solve for Tomorrow Contest, according to Duplin Schools.

The school is one of 15 finalists because students showed how they developed a cleaning system for boats using rain water to prevent invasive species from getting in. Students said, right now, the government spends billions on pesticides every year to deal with the problem.

“You’re doing more harm to the environment than help. So, we decided to find an eco-friendly, healthy way of protecting our waterways, and conserving species,” said Bryan Bonilla Aguilera, a student who worked on the project.

All you have to do is post or tweet using the school’s hastags #samsungsolveedhs, and #samsungsolve on Instagram and/or Twitter. You have until Friday, April 1 at midnight to vote.

As a national finalist, East Duplin High School will receive at least $40,000 in technology. If the school comes in as one of the top five, it will win $120,000.

Samsung will choose five national winners who will go to an awards ceremony in Washington, D.C., in April, and meet meet their congressional representatives.

According to a news release, the Samsung Solve for Tomorrow Contest is a program that challenges teachers and students to solve real-world issues in their community using classroom skills in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).
