4 hour comedy show raises money for serious cause

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A Wilmington community is coming together to help a well-known videographer who is battling cancer.

The Dead Crow Comedy room hosted Lymphomania Tuesday night. Four hours of jokes and laughs were all for Andrew Bunting.

“He’s a videographer and a very skilled one at that,” Event Coordinator Wills Maxwell said.

Bunting is known as the man behind the camera.

“I’m very grateful to have a job doing camera work,” Bunting said. “Doing something with a camera all day long is fantastic.”

Bunting shoots for a jewelry store during the day and then comes to the Dead Crow Comedy Room in his spare time.

“He’s always giving up his services to give us head shots, videos, whatever we need and usually for free, because that’s just how generous he is,” Maxwell said.

That is why Maxwell wants to give back to him.

“There are several comics in this town who through his videos have gotten gigs and into festivals and they owe all of that to the services that Andrew has provided,” Maxwell said.

In January, Bunting got an unexpected call from his doctor.

“He goes, ‘There is a very strong indication of a lymphoma,'” Bunting said.

It was difficult news for everyone.

“Very heart breaking,” Maxwell said. “He was very cavalier about it I guess because he already had time to process it, but it was a huge shock.”

Maxwell said he knew exactly what he needed to do.

“Andrew has done a lot for comedy,” Maxwell said. “It’s time for comedy to do something for him.”

There were dozens of acts, hundreds of jokes all in a four hour comedy show to raise money for Bunting’s treatment.

“Being the camera guy, I’m more used to you know being behind the scenes, not being in front, not being the center of attention,” Bunting said.

Bunting said doctors believe he will beat it, but in the meantime, this community is helping their cameraman put up a fight.

“It has really let me know that I have a lot of friends here,” Bunting said.
