State leaders discuss beach re-nourishment funds

CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WWAY) — Local, state, and federal leaders met in Carolina beach today to discuss dredging along our coast.

Politicians from across the state got a presentation on beach re-nourishment from Wilmington Regional Association of Realtors. This is an effort led by WRAR to build a statewide coalition in support of predictable, dedicated state funding for beach re-nourishment.

Congressman David Rouzer said beach towns are having to rely more and more on state funds while federal funds are decreasing for beach re-nourishment.

“I’m very much in support of some federal involvement, because quite frankly, we have folks come to these beaches from all over the country and they use these beaches and benefit from these beaches and it’s a key component to our economy, so I think it’s a very worthwhile endeavor,” Rouzer said.

The Water Resources Reform and Development Act of 2014 is set to expire in the next year which has been providing federal funding to coastal storm damage projects like Carolina Beach.
