Development on Wrightsville Avenue, Rogersville Road denied

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Some Wilmington residents are celebrating the future of their neighborhood after a city council decision.

City Council members denied a re-zoning ordinance for the area near Wrightsville Ave. and Rogersville Rd. to build a 3,000 square foot building that would allow for multiple uses.

Neighbors said they have been fighting for months against the plan that would re-zone that area from residential to conditional. Dozens of residents showed up Tuesday tonight to fight that plan. Some even had signs.

Charlotte Buckley said their biggest concern is the traffic at that intersection. She said neighbors have already had to get the speed limit reduced in that area, because of the amount of accidents.

Buckley said it is a huge relief to feel like the residents had a say on the issue.

“I’m excited,” Buckley said. “I want to see how and who voted for what, because there were a lot of residents that came out and we were kind of worn out, because we’ve been coming out for meetings and meetings.”

Residents were also concerned about the kinds of businesses conditional zoning allows. For example, residents were concerned that it would allow for a 24-hour medevac service.

Council members denied the request with a three to four vote. That got a standing ovation from the audience.
