Amateur boxing event returns to NC Azalea Festival this weekend
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Boxing has been part of the Azalea Festival for 36 years. For the second year in a row the boxing event at the Azalea Festival will be held at the Schwartz Center in downtown Wilmington. Andre Thompson is the chairman of boxing at the Azalea Festival. “It will be a two day event again,” Thompson said. “It’ll be free and the goal is to turn it into a national tournament. We’ll start at 2:30 on Saturday and 2:30 on Sunday. Once again it’s free to the public. What’s different this year is this is the second year for us downtown at the Schwartz Center. Easy access for all our participants who participate in the boxing event not only to box, but to have a little time to enjoy the festival, but I hope they don’t stay down there too long.”
