Local man drives his 1923 Model T through the snow
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — You’d expect to see snowplows after a winter storm…but not this… it’s not a plow…it’s not a sleigh…it’s a 1923 Model T Town Sedan maneuvering around the snow and ice.
“They are fun cars to drive, they are easy to maintain, they do very well in the snow”, said Michael Hamby.
Hamby is the owner of the classic vehicle. He took it out onto the snow covered roads of Wrightsville Beach and the surrounding areas right after the storm.
“There’s people honking horns… I went up to the Wrightsville Beach sign and backed up to start taking pictures and people are like… I’m taking all these pictures of you and sending it to everybody”, said Hamby.
Hamby bought the car in 2017 from a widow for its pristine condition, but in an age where we have self-driving cars… the question is… how does this vehicle handle the snow?
Actually pretty good! One reason may be that they were built for dirt and inclement conditions.
“It’s just like a tractor transmission so that’s why tractors have so much torch able to grip really hard. the tires are extremely small, so they don’t have a real wide area to spin”, said Hamby.
Hamby also said driving in the snow is now kind of a tradition, and that he did it in 2018 when the area received significant snowfall.
Because it doesn’t snow here often, we can’t blame a car buff for showing off.
